Goren Point Count Convention Guidelines

 High Card Point Countt Distribution Value  Bid Suit Value Combined High Card Points Require for Game
 Ace - 4 Void - 3 No Trump - 40, 30,30... No Trump - 25 pts
King - 3 Singleton - 2 Spades - 30 Spades - 26-27 pts
Queen - 2 Double - 1 Hearts - 30 sames as Spades
Jack - 1 Even Dist - minus 1 Diamons - 20 Diamonds - 27-28 pts
No aces minus 1 Don't count both distribution and unprotected high cards Clubs - 20 pts sames as Diamonds

 

To count high card points, the face card must be "protected", i.e. Kx, Qxx, Jxxx.

Opening bids: (Bidding during the first round)

  • Must have 13 high card points or more
  • Bid your 5 card suite
  • Bid 1 NoTrump if: 16 - 18 pts, even distribution
  • Exceptions:Bid 3 in a suite with 6 - 9 pts and 7 cards in a suite
  • Bid 1 club with points but no 5 card suite
  • With less than 13 points ­ PASS
  • With 19 points - get help

Responses: (Your partner has opened, indicating at least 13 pts.)

  • 6 - 9 pts Bid a 5 cards suit if you can stay at the same level. Raise your partner if you have 3 cards in the bid suite
  • Bid 1 NT (weak response) with no support and no five card Bid only once
  • 10 - 12 Bid a 5 card suite even if you must go to a new level. You may respond again.
  • 13 - 15 Bid 2 NT to indicate opening points or Jump in your partners suite
  • 16 and up Get help, get excited

The goal is to win two games for a rubber (so you can get a new partner). Game is 100 points.

The score is based on your bid - see bidding points in the table above, i.e., 2 Clubs is 40 pts.

Generally speaking, to bid game, the combined high card point total of you and your partner must be: 3 NT 25 high card points 4 Spades or Hearts 26-27 pts 5 Diamonds or Clubs 28-29 pts.

Fine print: All of the above are subject to exceptions. Everyone has their own interpretation of how to do things the "right way."
